Unplugged weddings have been on the rise over the past couple of years, but not everyone is jumping on board. Here’s why you should consider an unplugged wedding ceremony. Have you ever been to a wedding and suddenly you can’t see because someone is trying to capture the moment with their own cell phone? How annoying is that? Well, it’s a wedding photographer’s nightmare and the bride and groom aren’t so happy about it either. What is an Unplugged Wedding? An unplugged wedding ceremony means that at no point should any of the guests take their own photos or video the ceremony. All devices should also be turned off or put on silent until after the ceremony. Pros of Having an Unplugged Ceremony For starters, you don’t have to worry about phones going off in the midst of the ceremony. It also keeps people from taking photos and videos on their own, then posting them on social media before the married couple is ready. As I mentioned before, there’s always that one person that is constantly trying to capture the entire wedding, making it unpleasureable for other guests. By keeping out the devices, your guests can truly be in the moment with you. From a wedding photographer’s perspective, it is hard sometimes to get the perfect shot when everyone else is worried about taking their own photos. When you invest in wedding photos you want them to be amazing, and you don’t want to have shots where your guests are immersed in their phones or blocking the photographer’s view. The selfie has its place, but let’s face it, a wedding ceremony isn’t one of them. Cons of Having an Unplugged Ceremony Some photos from personal cellphones show off awesome candid shots, but with an unplugged wedding that won’t be possible. You can always have your guests take their own photos during the reception! There’s also no sneak peeks. Meaning there will be no ceremony footage until you receive your wedding proofs. So the worst-case scenario is having to wait. How To Announce and Unplugged Wedding It’s definitely wise to mention no devices on the invitations, but by the time your wedding day arrives, you will need a little reminder. Decorate signs at the ceremony entrance are amazing to let your guest know about the unplugged wedding, without actually having to confront them.
